As we’re entering spring of 2021, many homeowners are preparing for upgrades; and when it comes to home improvements, new flooring can be equally pleasing from an aesthetic and functional perspective.  At Floor Coverings International, our flooring experts can provide guidance on which flooring is best for your home while also helping you to choose from our wide selection of stylish flooring options.  Now, our design experts have collaborated to bring you some recommendations based on early flooring trends for 2021.

Vinyl

Resilient, durable, and affordable vinyl flooring options are leading the way in flooring trends for 2021.  Not only are vinyl floorings available in a wide variety of colours, patterns, and textures, vinyl is easy to maintain and stain resistant.  Luxury vinyl is an increasingly popular choice for family-friendly flooring because it offers the appearance of wood flooring without the maintenance requirements and often at a fraction of the cost.  Especially popular this year so far is wide-plank luxury vinyl which mimics the look of wide-plank wood flooring with impressive detail.  Or, if your style has you drawn to stone or tile flooring, vinyl flooring is still a great choice.  Manufactured to look like high-end materials including natural stones, luxury vinyl provides an authentic, elegant appearance in an affordable price range.

Carpet

For the better part of the last 15 or so years, carpet has often been overlooked in style magazines and design trends; and yet, carpet still leads the way in flooring sales.  Today, carpet technology has advanced so far that these floor coverings are easier than ever to maintain and available in an impressive range of styles, colours, and patterns.  Homeowners often choose carpet for warmth or comfort, but in 2021 we predict more bold patterns and jaw-dropping colours that make a serious design statement.  Fortunately, carpets technology features waterproof and stain-resistant materials that are also environmentally-friendly.  If you’re looking to make a statement in your home, consider multi-coloured carpets or unique patterns and designs.

Green Flooring

As you may expect, 2021 continues to see trends with green flooring options that are manufactured from recycled or sustainable materials.  Two leading examples of green flooring options are cork and reclaimed woods.  Cork flooring is comfortable and sustainable because it is sourced from the bark of the cork oak tree; because the bark will grow back, the environmental impact is minimal.  In fact, cork bark can be harvested multiple times so the trees are left intact.  On the other hand, reclaimed-wood flooring is another great option for the environmentally-conscious.  From wood sourced from oak barrels or even recycled flooring, salvaged woods make for beautiful floors that are often eco- and budget conscious.
